The presenter, Matthew Damhuis Divisional Manager: Water Services | Specialist in Mine Water Management from Digby Wells Environmental will discuss the following topic:
Key Mine Water Management Tools for Operational Effectiveness.
Water is a key resource and risk source in the mining environment, requiring active management to enable safe, productive and sustainable mining to take place. Managing water to the expectation of all the stakeholders inside, and outside, of the mining operation’s system is a complex task with many moving parts and interconnected components. Matthew will share some of the tools, processes and best practices that he has used over the course of his career on both sides of the operation/consulting fence that are indispensable to both water positive and water deficit mining operations. This includes probabilistic site-wide water balance flow and mass balance models; water management strategies and tactical plans; conceptual hydrogeological models and predictive groundwater models; hydrological resilience planning for effective flood risk management; an effective water data management system; and a representative water quality and quantity monitoring network.
Digby Wells Environmental provides environmental, social and sustainability solutions to the resources sector globally.

Matthew is Divisional Manager for Water Services at Digby Wells Environmental (Pty) Ltd with a BSc in Geology, and BSc (Hons.) in Hydrogeology and 15 years of professional experience. Matthew has been involved in a large number of groundwater modelling projects and hydrogeological investigations. These have included projects in Mali, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Zambia and South Africa. Matthew was also the operational dewatering and water management competent person at Sishen Iron Ore Mine and the corporate specialist for water management at Kumba Iron Ore, responsible for technical and strategic support to Kumba’s operations. This included development of corporate standards for Adaptive Water Management at Kumba Iron Ore and management of water related aspects for corporate reporting in terms of IRMA, CDP, ICMM and GISTM.
