In an effort to raise the standards and quality of the dewatering industry worldwide and increase knowledge sharing within the community, TDI is providing a range of free webinar training courses, developed in cooperation with our members, for our members, followers and the wider dewatering community.
The presenter will discuss the following topics:
Design & Modelling for Groundwater Engineering & Control by Eur Ing Dr Stephen Thomas.
Dr Stephen Thomas, Technical Director of OGI Groundwater Specialists, will take you through a journey of the Modelling of Groundwater Control.
He will explain what modelling comprises, and will explain the importance of an accurate and representative conceptual model, together with the requirement of good judgement when deciding on the appropriate material properties and boundary conditions.
Stephen will then introduce how the physical behaviour of groundwater moving through a porous medium, can be represented by a governing equation, and then how by solving this equation, variables of both flow and head can be calculated.
Examples will be presented of how these equations can be solved using (i) analytical solutions, such as the Thesis and Cooper-Jacob methods, together with (ii) numerical models, and in particular the Finite Element Method.
In conclusion, 50mins is insufficient to present all the above in detail, but it will provide a good overview from which the viewer will appreciate the benefits of modelling of Groundwater Control Systems.

Dr Stephen Thomas is Founder Director of OGI Groundwater Specialists, and is a leading professional in the field of Groundwater Engineering and Control.
Stephen is a Chartered Senior Civil Engineer in both the UK and Portugal, and is in his 48th year of his Civil Engineering Career, starting at Swansea University in 1976.
The training session will take place Wednesday the 27th of March 2024, at 4pm – 5pm SAST and (2pm – 3pm UTC).
Registrations will close at 2pm (SAST) on the 27th of March 2024, so please be sure to register before this time. Feel free to make use of this time zone converter to not miss out on the webinar.
